This course is aimed at professionals (doctors, nurses, midwifes) who wish to familiarise themselves with the jargon of the health and social care industry in Spanish, as well as improve their grammar and communication skills.

Students will be given the vocabulary required to communicate with patients, to write up patient reports and understand patient history records, to book appointments, and to handle other situations that are common when working in the healthcare sector.

Lessons concentrate on the practical side of learning a language, in order to help students develop their communication skills as quickly as possible. Although this course focuses primarily on giving students the skills they need to hold their own in the health care industry, they will come away with skills that are essential in any context where communication is key.

The course consists of two hours of tuition per day and is designed to accompany any of our standard Spanish courses here at Universpain.  For best results, we recommend that you combine this course with our standard intensive course. 

This course gives students the skills they need to understand and respond to situations that commonly arise in the healthcare industry and brings students up to level B2.

Aims:

  1. To give the professional the skills they need to carry out their work in Spanish.
  2. To give students a basic understanding of the Spanish healthcare industry.

Content:

Classes are based on a syllabus that aims to give students a good grounding in grammar, functions, vocabulary and Spanish culture and society, through oral and written activities, as well as exercises in comprehension.

  1. Specific vocabulary:  the hospital, the operating theatre, the human body, insurance and social security.
  2. Written language: communication channels inside and outside the hospital or medical centre, healthcare jargon and online communication
  3. Listening comprehension:  oral texts, dialogues, presentations, real life situations and telephone conversations.
  4. Grammar exercises:  the imperative, formal constructions, the subjunctive, the conditional and hypothetical constructions
  5. Formal documents:  letter of complaint, letter of information, CV, formal documents, forms and invoices.
  6. Case studies:  bedside manner, risk prevention, emergency situations, hygiene, consultations, and monitoring patient progress.
