The first literary text written completely in Castilian language was the anonymous "Cantar del mio Cid", whose original version was in the 12th century. In the 13th century the "Gran e General Estoria de Espana" was written by Alfonso X, king of Castile between 1252 and 1284. These first texts written in Castilian were not adjusted to an orthographic rule, since this one did not exist. Nevertheless, from Alfonso X, called "The Wise", published his works in Castilian instead of Latin, it is possible to detect a certain uniformity and this one is, probably, the most phonetic writing of the history of the language. In addition it acquired, thanks to this monarch, the prestige of a national language. In fact, two stages can be considered in the linguistic history of the Castilian: the first, denominated "Romance", in that the samples of the new language are homogenized around the speech of the city of Burgos, the first centre to level the language, and second, denominated "Castilian", that begins from the works of the mentioned Alfonso X "The Wise". Later, in the 14th century, it appears "El Libro del Buen Amor", of Juan Ruiz, arcipreste of Hita. On the other hand, in the historical scope, Castile consolidated itself like the most powerful monarchy in the peninsular centre, which allowed him, in the 13th century to extend its dominion on the neighbour kingdoms. It became the only Iberian kingdom able to obtain the recovery of the territories under Muslim rule, which is, practically, synonymous of the expansion of the Castilian. Then this dialect, innovating and eminently integrating, became language of culture, because Castile needed a common linguistic communication vehicle. It was also the language through which great historical, legal, literary and scientific works were translated. Thanks to that the East culture was transmitted all over Europe, process in which Alfonso X "The Wise" had radical importance because he reunited many intellectuals grouped in the School of translators of Toledo, integrated, among others, by Jews and Arabs experts.

In the 16th century, the term "Spanish" prevailed and became the national language name. It's done to speak to God". The term "Castilian" continued like the name of the actual dialect of Castile. From 1492 to this date, Spanish language has extended itself all over the world.   [Mas...]
