Salamanca is a relatively small and welcoming city situated in the north west of the Iberian Peninsula, in the Castile and Leon region approximately 200 Km. (125 miles) from Madrid.

The University of Salamanca is the oldest university in Spain and one of the first in Europe, along with Paris, Oxford, and Bologna. This makes Salamanca one of the most important student centers in Spain and a reference center for Spanish in the world.

The city has a population of approximately 180,000, making Salamanca pleasant, safe, yet cosmopolitan.

The inhabitants, called "salmantinos," are welcoming and open and make settling into everyday life in Spain and in Salamanca easier for foreign students.
